P4000 MXM Upgrade on Thinkpad P70

I carried out the long-delayed P70 MXM upgrade plan a few days ago. As you know,

the Thinkpad P70 has an MXM Slot that can replace graphics cards. Replacing the Thinkpad P70 with a graphics card requires some effort and skill.

First, you need to modify the Bios code to pass Intel Bootguard. You cannot modify even one bit of BIOS code while Intel Bootguard is enabled.

Second, in order to install graphics card drivers without difficulty, you must modify the bios code for the subsystem ID.
         
           Otherwise, you need to set up your graphics card driver manually. Subsystem ID of Maxwell graphic card  is located in ‘HybridsystemCC  module’.

           Search a HEX String “ F1 22 17 AA” or “ 17 AA” . Two subsystem ID should be changed  for Hybrid Graphic and  Discrete Graphic.



Third, the MXM graphics card purchased must have a Vbios certified by Lenovo.

Fourth, in order to use UEFI mode, the GOP code module for the Pascal graphics card must be inserted into the genuine P70 bios.

For this project, I recently brought a P4000 MXM Card from Germany.

After a few hours of modification, I finally made a final modification Bios,

and finally I was able to install the P4000 MXM card without any problems on the P70.


I can install a P3000/P4000/P5000 graphics card by modifying the BIOS. Of course,  I can install the MXM card on the P3200/P4200/P5200 in case of modifying bios code furtuer.

Besides MXM Replacement, Install a B173Zan01.0  (400nit, Adobe 100% Color Gamut). For Color calibrator Sensor, I modfied the EEPROM of B173zan01.0.

You should unlock or unprotected your SPD EEPROM ( 512KB or 256KB ) before flashing modified SPD flash image and desolder 10Kohm Pulldown resistor on EEPROM Pin 3.

For Overclocking and Undervolting, I also activate Bios Advanced Menu.

* As you know or not, I can't make a universal modified p70 Bios since bios has its own mac address,TPM key, Windows DPK ( Digital Product Key) and Intel Management Engine ,

第四，为了完整的支持 UEFI 模式,，必须将Pascal 的GOP代码模块写入到P70 BIOS中。

为了实现以上，我不久前从德国购买了一张 MXM的P4000显卡。
经过几个小时的努力, 终于得到了最终的修改版BIOS,
在ThinkPad P70上顺利安装了这个 P4000显卡，使用一切正常。

总结一下：
只要符合以上条件，可以通过修改BIOS，在ThinkPad P70上安装P3000/P4000/P5000显卡；
如果我进一步研究修改BIOS的话，ThinkPad P70安装P3200/P4200/P5200上也不是难事；
（译者注：MXM的P3200/P4200/P5200显卡，目前似乎只有HP ZBOOK 17 G5有采用，所以应该还需要修改VBIOS）。

另外，这次对ThinkPad P70的大折腾，还换装 B173Zan01.0 (400nit, Adobe 100 色域)的屏幕，为了能使用ThinkPad P70内置色彩校准器, 我还对 B173zan01.0 的 EEPROM 进行了修改。
最后为了超频, 我还开启了ThinkPad P70的BIOS 高级菜单（译者注：ThinkPad官方BIOS隐藏了高级菜单）。

不错，这是一个好办法，而且给其它机型升级显卡一个思路，但是过程怎么操作没有分享出来，这非常遗憾，希望能将过程分享出来。这样早期的机型升级显卡就不需要修改inf了。可以完美直接支持了，这是一个非常棒的过程。

Could you please given us some hint on how to change the mxm GPU on W701? With a GTX 980m upgrade W701 can still be viable for at least 3-5 more years. The FX3800m is pathetic
