The Panasonic KX-HGW200 Concourse Broadband Networking Gateway ($300 list) is the first home gateway to support ShareWave, a new 11-Mbps wireless network technology that's an incompatible modification of the 802.11b standard.
ShareWave, also known as WhiteCap, adds multimedia quality of service, performance, and security features to the 802.11b standard. WhiteCap technology is likely to be a key component in the new 802.11e standard currently in the proposal stage, but current WhiteCap-equipped wireless networks don't talk to other wireless devices. The KX-HGW200 is PC- and Mac-compatible, but on the Macintosh side it supports Ethernet networking only, not phone-line or wireless networking.
The KX-HGW200 supports Ethernet and phone-line networking out of the box. For wireless support, you have to purchase one KX-HGC200 Wireless Card ($200 list) for the gateway and one for each PC you want to connect wirelessly. That puts the opening price for wireless networking at $700—or $150 more than comparable products with 802.11b support.
We installed the KX-HGW200 on our home network and found configuring it easy with a DSL modem. We used a browser on a Windows 98SE-based Dell desktop PC connected to the gateway via a 3Com Ethernet NIC. We also connected a Windows 98 Toshiba Infinia desktop with a Netgear HomePNA adapter. It took a little more effort to get the wireless networking feature working, but once we installed a firmware upgrade on the gateway (included with the CD that came with the wireless card) we established a link between the gateway and a Compaq Presario notebook with Windows Me and another KX-HGC200 wireless card installed. All three PCs saw each other for file and printer sharing, and all accessed the Internet via our DSL modem.
The Panasonic KX-HGW200 gateway and KX-HGC200 wireless cards work exactly as promised, with reasonably easy setup. Until 802.11e arrives, the only caveat is current incompatibility with other wireless standards. |
